Marvel’s ‘Eternals’: Who’s Playing Who
San Diego Comic-Con was this weekend and you know what that means — it’s Marvel news times.
Last year, Marvel wasn’t very vocal at SDCC since that was just around the time The Infinity Saga was wrapping up. But now that that’s done, in the words of Kevin Feige himself, it’s time for ‘beginnings’.
One of the most exciting announcements at this year’s Comic-Con was confirmation of an Eternals film. For those of you who don’t know, the Eternals are a race of beings who were an offshoot of the evolutionary process that created sentient life on Earth. The Celestials created humans, Eternals, and their evil enemies, the Deviants.
The film will likely introduce said Deviants and have them be the central villains in the production. Eight actors are currently attached to the project, all of which were officially introduced at SDCC. Each plays an Eternal, but we wonder – who’s playing who? Let’s break it down.
Angelina Jolie a.k.a. Thena
Who’s the actor? Angelina Jolie is a world-famous actress, a three time Oscar nominee, and one of the most influential people in Hollywood. If you don’t know who she is, turn on the damn TV.
Who’s the superhero? Thena is a warrior specializing in cosmic energy manipulation. She’s one of the more complex characters with a rich and enticing backstory – something the film will likely explore.
Richard Madden a.k.a. Ikaris
Who’s the actor? Richard Madden’s breakthrough role was Rob Stark in Game of Thrones. Since then, he’s been in Cinderella and, more recently, Rocketman.
Who’s the superhero? Ikaris is the second most powerful Eternal (only after someone called Zuras) and has superhuman strength, stamina, speed, flight, energy manipulation, and teleportation. He’s the Captain America of the Eternals.
Kumail Nanjiani a.k.a. Kingo
Who’s the actor? Kumail Nanjiani is a Pakistani comedian. His Hollywood breakthrough came after the success of The Big Sick, a film that Nanjiani not only starred in, but also wrote.
Who’s the superhero? Kingo was originally in charge of the Japanese settlement for the Eternals. In present day, he’s an action star in Japan and loves portraying the Samurai. He also loves fighting in the traditional manner of the Samurai.
Salma Hayek a.k.a. Ajak
Who’s the actor? Salma Hayek is a Mexican actress and, yet again, very well-known and influential in Hollywood. Her most famous roles include Frida, Desperado, and Wild Wild West.
Who’s the superhero? Ajak was born in Siberia and took the role as ‘Speaker to the Celestials’. She is the unofficial leader of the Eternals.
Brian Tyree Henry a.k.a. Phastos
Who’s the actor? Brian Tyree Henry’s breakthrough came after the success of the TV show Atlanta. Since then, Henry has been in If Beale Street Could Talk, Spider-Man: Into The Spiderverse, and Widows. His future projects include Godzila vs. Kong, Joker, and A Quiet Place 2.
Who’s the superhero? Phastos is the weapon-smith of the Eternals. Unlike his other colleagues, he’s much more ambivalent about violence and battle.
Dong-seok Ma a.k.a. Gilgamesh
Who’s the actor? Dong-seok Ma is one of the most successful Asian action stars. Often compared to Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson, this actor has starred in dozens Asian action films and is just now getting into Hollywood.
Who’s the superhero? The Hulk of the Eternals. Gilgamesh is physically the strongest member of the group.
Lia McHugh a.k.a. Sprite
Who’s the actor? As the youngest member of the Eternals family, Lia McHugh doesn’t have as much experience under her belt as her fellow co-stars. She’s known for The Lodge, American Woman, and Totem.
Who’s the superhero? Sprite is considered to be the trickster of the Eternals, often taunting her fellow superheros with complex illusions. She is also unable to grow.
Lauren Ridloff a.k.a. Makkari
Who’s the actor? Lauren Ridloff is a deaf mute actress, mainly known for her role in the latest season of The Walking Dead. She, too, doesn’t have that much Hollywood experience.
Who’s the superhero? Makkari learned engineering from her parents and is a member of the Eternals’ Technological Guild. As a result, she designed numerous high-velocity vehicles and ended up making herself extremely fast as well.
