5 Categories for New Oscars the Academy Should Actually Make Happen
Earlier this year, the Academy officially added a new category to their list: Best Popular Film. A ridiculous decision, undoubtedly; the Academy soon realized that and then went on to announce that they are ‘postponing’ the release of the new category for some time.
Surely, this ‘Best Popular Film’ Oscar will not come into play. It received massive public backlash and the Academy is probably sorry they even brought it up.
But that got us thinking: what are some categories that actually should be added in the Oscar race? Here are five we are sure deserve to be considered.
Best Voice Performance
Voice acting is slowly, but surely creeping it’s way into Hollywood. And of course it is. Animation is, certainly, a leading contender in this category, but that’s not all. The cinema art is evolving and we’re constantly seeing more bold and innovative movies on the big screen. A Best Voice Performance category could allow for more motion capture work to be recognized. The Academy doesn’t want to do a Best Motion Capture Performance Award? Bend the rules a little and make that into Best Voice Performance. After all, most motion capture performances include a heavy load of voice work. And most importantly, a category like this one could have given Scarlett Johansson the recognition she deserved for her work in Her.
Best Soundtrack
Not Best Score – Best Soundtrack. Already existing songs being netted in the film ambiance has been a common occurrence ever since cinema became a thing more than a century ago. It adds so much: sets the atmosphere, warps the narrative, even serves as character development at times. Creating a great soundtrack is key to finishing an altogether good movie. Sometimes, even, the soundtrack is as important than the film itself – we’re looking at you, Baby Driver.
Best Stuntwork
Stunts are a vastly important part of all action & adventure flicks. And since the general public is more so interested in exactly those types of films, that makes stunts a vastly important part in the general movie goer’s movie going experience. Good stuntwork can make or break a movie. Mission: Impossible – Fallout that has a bland and generic plot, but absolutely amazing stunts and thus – people love it. Plus, this would allow the Academy to include more blockbuster popcorn flicks in the award show, which comes close to that Best Popular Film category they were trying to shove down our throats.
Best Breakout Creator
A Best Breakout Creator Award would beautifully bring attention to great artists in Hollywood we should be keeping track of in the upcoming years. Most people would argue that this should a Best Breakout Performance Award, but we beg to differ. Sure, it would be fantastic to see young actors get nominated for such an award, thus getting all the attention and future projects they would surely deserve, but why stop there? With a category like this one, we could be paying attention not only to great new actors, but also directors, writers, cinematographers, editors. We need to appreciate the genius minds entering the industry yearly and give all of them the recognition they deserve.
Best Scene
This is a personal favorite of ours. Best Scene is a category we’ve long hoped for (surely unrealistically, this is one that will probably never happen) and we’d do anything to see it become a reality. There are a lot of good movies. There are a lot of fantastic movies. But more often that not, remembering detailed thoughts and emotions about a film can be challenging; after all, we see so many. But a single scene? That sticks with you. And very often, when talking about great cinematic works of art, people refer to specific scenes in them. So why not have an award for that exactly? One single scene can warp a good movie into something so much more: an experience. A single scene can evoke extreme emotion. A single scene can be better than the constant wave of trash coming through Hollywood. And we’d love to see this award go to that final scene in Annihilation. That was unbelievable.
We’ll probably never see any these become a reality. The Oscars are a business and a lot of things go into that, so adding a new category is, as we saw not too long ago, a risky move. We can only wait and hope to see some changes.
We will, however, be adding all of these in our Yearly OurMovieLife Awards. The second edition of those will be coming out some time around the Oscar ceremony.
