Top 15 Most Anticipated Films of 2019
It’s that time of the year again.
This is our favorite list to make. We love thinking about all the films we’re excited about in the new year. And after the sad, pathetic roller-coaster that 2018 has been movie-wise, it’s nice to finally be genuinely excited about new film releases.
So here it is. OurMovieLife’s 15 most anticipated films of 2019.
Honorable mentions:
- Frozen 2
- Pokemon Detective Pikachu
- Hellboy
- The Irishman
- The Beach Bum
15. Spider-Man: Far From Home
The first ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’ doesn’t stand out as the best Marvel superhero movie, but it laid out a lot of necessary ground work. Tom Holland is undoubtedly brilliant as Peter Parker. This sequel is a nice change of atmosphere (it takes place in Europe, finally) and Jake Gyllenhaal is the villain. Sold.
14. John Wick: Chapter 3
The first two parts of the John Wick franchise stand as a ray of light in the modern action film genre. Both are entertaining as hell, bloody, bold, brilliant, and disturbingly real. We should expect nothing else of the new installment. Sold.
13. Glass
‘Unbreakable’ remains as one of the more original films in the superhero genre even before said genre existed. M. Night Shyamalan created something amazing back in 1998 that fans still rewatch and appreciate today. M. Night continued this is in 2016 by giving us the shocking drama-horror (what genre is it, really) ‘Split’. Now we’re getting a crossover between those two? Mr. Glass and The Beast teaming up to fight David Dunn? Sold.
12. The New Mutants
You know, this was on our list last year. And we’re attaching the same trailer we did last year. ‘The New Mutants’ has gone through a lot of production problems (too many to explain, honestly) and almost didn’t get released at all, so many are skeptical. Which is understandable. But the fact remains: it’s a horror movie about mutants. And at OurMovieLife we really appreciate a good genre mesh-up. Sold.
11. Kingsman 3
It was announced recently that Taron Egerton will not be a part of this new installment of the ‘Kingsman’ franchise. That could be great because it could possibly lead the story into territories otherwise unavailable. On the other hand, it could be bad because it could make the franchise chaotic and sadly unaware of itself. Nevertheless… it is a new ‘Kingsman’ movie. Sold.
10. Captain Marvel
MCU movie #2 on this list. Anything MCU is anything that excites us. This is not a sequel to an already existing superhero movie and it is not a crossover, so there is certainly cause for thrills. And not that this needs to be justified, but: it’s not higher because the trailer is not good. There, we said it. But, still, a new MCU movie in space? Sold.
9. Rocketman
‘Rocketman’ looks like something that might fix that bitter taste left in our mouths after ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’. Any possibly good Hollywood musical is something to look out for and be excited about (because there really aren’t many of those). Especially one with Taron Egerton. Especially one about Elton John. And especially one that is apparently going to be the first ever R-rated musical ever. Sold.
8. Dark Phoenix
Fun fact: this stood at number 8 last year, too.
‘Dark Phoenix’ has been in production for quite some time now, originally aiming for a 2018 release date. The film was pushed back due to massive reshoots of the third act and because the release date didn’t fit well with the ‘Gambit’ release (which, by the way, was pushed yet again, this time to March of 2020). Nevertheless, ‘Dark Phoenix’ is happening. The obvious reason to be excited about this is because it is an X-Men movie; our favorite characters are back and they are overcoming their biggest challenge yet. The Dark Phoenix comic-book plotline remains as one of the most iconic stories in comics ever and we’re dying to finally see it unfold on the big screen.
But the real reason to be excited about this is that it’s the last X-Men movie since the characters are moving to Disney. This will be the official conclusion to the 19-year-old series. Sold.
7. Joker
It’s lovely to see something that looks genuinely good come out of DC. ‘Joker’ is the first installment of their second movie universe, DC Dark. Joaquin Phoenix will surely do a terrific job in this, as he always does. And it is the Joker, after all. It’s him getting a stand-alone movie. One of the best, most intriguing and mysterious characters out there. Sold.
6. Star Wars: Episode IX
It’s ‘Star Wars’. Not only have the first two films of the new trilogy been really amazing (dare we say: the best ones yet), but the excitement and love from the die-hard fans always contributes to make any new ‘Star Wars’ movie release much more than a simple trip to the cinema; rather, an experience. And, again, it’s ‘Star Wars’. Need we say more? Sold.
5. It: Chapter Two
The first ‘It’ movie was actually really, really good and it made my personal top 10 of the year. ‘It: Chapter 2’ looks no different; the cast is absolutely brilliant and it’s really exciting seeing where the story will go with the new actors on board. ‘It’ definitely stands as one of the best Stephen King movie adaptations, especially in recent years, and one can only expect more from the production team in the future. Sold.
4. The Lion King
Most of us grew up with this. And seeing it again, on the big screen, with possibly the best CGI of all time, is something wonderfully unexpected. ‘The Lion King’ has a spectacular cast and an amazing production team behind it and, based on what ‘The Jungle Book’ turned out to be, it’s fairly certain that this will not only be a fantastic movie on its own, but also a revolution in live-action cinema. And seeing young Simba on screen yet again? Sold.
3. Zombieland 2
‘Zombieland’ stands as one of the best action-comedies in the past decade. The concept was good then and remains enticing today, too. And after production hell, the cast (and director) have finally been brought back together and are currently filming this sequel. More than 10 years later. But it is happening. More of Columbus and Wichita’s adventures? More rules and dead zombies? Sold.
2. Once Upon a Time in Hollywood
An original story by a brilliant storyteller. Not a remake, not a sequel, not a reboot. Just something fresh and (probably) absolutely awesome. And Al Pacino. Dakota Fanning. Brad Pitt. Margot Robbie. Quentin Tarantino directing. Leonardo DiCaprio’s first film since 2015. Sold.
1. Avengers: Endgame
The end of the best movie adventure we’ve ever embarked upon. 11 years in the making, 21 movies, dozens of amazing characters; ‘Avengers: Endgame’ is culmination we need and deserve. The MCU journey has been truly spectacular and we’re more than excited to see this first era end. Sad, of course, but excited, too. So, a new ‘Avengers’ movie and the end of a story that’s been building up for more than a decade? 100% sold.

Also, we know that it’s around this time that our ‘Best of the Year’ article usually comes out, but this time we’re waiting. There are a lot of Oscar contenders yet to be in cinemas, so we’re going to wait to see those before making a definite ranking. It’s still coming. Possibly soon.

Intrigued for Kingsman 3, and honestly can’t wait for Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and Avengers. An awesome visualisation of who’s who in the MCU:

I only recently found out that we’re finally getting a Zombieland sequel and I couldn’t be happier! The wait for a Star Wars trailer is going to be the death of me for sure, I can’t wait for Episode 9.
