Opinion Weekdays #6: Do We Really Need That ‘ALF’ Reboot?

We live in the Golden Age of Television. Today, any story can be explored and developed thoroughly not only through cinema, but also TV. The medium presents a plethora of colorful options and ideas and there really are no limits.

And yet, Warner Bros. is producing an ‘ALF’ reboot.

An ‘ALF’. Reboot.

The original series ran from 1986 to 1990 and is something most 90’s kids grew up with and adored as children. The lovely puppet ALF (a.k.a. Alien Life Form) and his witty jokes taught us to love and appreciate great humor and good storytelling at a young age.

It has been confirmed that a reboot of ‘ALF’ is now in very early stages of development over at Warner Bros. TV. This comes amid the rapid wave of reboot series.

Do we really need it though?

No. No, we don’t.

The original sitcom has stood the test of time. It was based on a fairly smart premise, gave us really good comedy, and managed to break expectations.

‘ALF’ doesn’t need to come back. It’s great the way it is.

But maybe, just maybe, someone over at Warner Bros. TV, perhaps some genius writer and/or storyteller, will manage to make something good of this reboot? Apparently the new series is to start where the original series ended a.k.a. ALF being found by the government. Sources also say that the reboot will follow the same alien going to a different family.

Sounds sketchy and unnecessary, doesn’t it? I think it does.

But…

Maybe, hopefully, someone will manage to tell a good story with this, while simultaneously managing to adapt the comedy in the reboot to the comedy this new generation enjoys. ‘ALF’ in 2019 will not and cannot have the exact same vibe as the original show. The reboot must use different storytelling techniques. The reboot also needs to be fresh and different and the creators must find a way for the new generation to like it. And yet still, it should keep some of the charm the original sitcom had.

Will someone achieve this? Will we have a good reboot of ‘ALF’, one that tells a good story, one that’s funny, one that sets an appropriate tone for today’s day and age? One that does all that while still honoring the original source material? Personally, I think: no. I think this reboot will suck and I think it’s completely unnecessary.

But hey, maybe I’m wrong. I actually sure hope so. An ‘ALF’ reboot isn’t something we need, but if they manage to make it good, it would definitely be something awesome to see.
