Opinion Weekdays #2: ‘Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol 3’ Is Doomed Without James Gunn
About a week ago, Marvel Studios and Disney cut ties with director James Gunn. The reason why was that the director posted offensive tweets touching on areas like pedophilia and rape over 10 years ago. James Gunn will not be directing ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’ in light of these developments.
Now, personally, I think Disney should not have fired James Gunn. The man has been very outspoken about his past and his experimental films that explore and develop taboo topics. He used to be a very controversial man, but isn’t anymore. James Gunn has said he is sorry about the tweets and stated that he doesn’t blame Disney for their decision. Many of his colleagues have also stated that he has changed and that he would never tweet or even think something like that today.
I think Disney’s decision contradicts with their entire mission statement. Change is possible; as Disney proves and preaches every day through their projects. To fire a man because of jokes he shared over 10 years ago seems too drastic, especially since both set man and the people around him have stated that he has changed.
Disney is not to blame through; as you can see below, the tweets really are quite scandalous. Disney is in the middle of a huge merger at the moment and in light of the recent #metoo movement, firing James Gunn is the smart and safe choice.
But getting to my main point:
‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3’ is doomed without this man. Well, maybe not doomed, Marvel never truly f*cks up, but ‘Vol 3’ will not be as good as the first two if James Gunn doesn’t direct.
That man did so much for those films. He set the tone perfectly, told the story exquisitely, presented the characters wonderfully, made the movies funny, heartfelt, and entertaining. Without him, ‘Vol 3’ will miss a lot of those things. The tone and storytelling will not be the same. The film will be messier and not as innovative. The soundtrack will never be as good as the ones James Gunn did.
‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3’ may not be doomed, but it will be different. And the previous two films have such a distinguishable vibe that I don’t think the change will be good. The new film doesn’t need to be different, it just needs to be innovative enough that it’s still exciting and fresh.
James Gunn can do that. He knows the franchise. He know how to make the third film good. Bring him back. He’s changed, but ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ doesn’t need to.
