Opinion Weekdays #1: Lily James Is Amazing!
Right, so ‘Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again’ has been out in theaters for a few days now.
Now, let’s get the obvious out of the way, this is, surprisingly, a really great film. It has a lot of heart to it, it’s entertaining, the storytelling is exquisite, and it’s definitely (and again: shockingly) an improvement on the first one.
But now let’s talk about Lily James.
Lily James a freaking brilliant. She shows tremendous range in ‘Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again’ and her actors’ instincts make her character truthful and believable. She gives justice to what Meryl Streep did in the first movie, but also additionally serves the character from within herself.
As I was watching ‘Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again’, getting all excited and drooling every time Lily James spoke, I found myself spellbound by this actress.
Now, I’ve known the name for some time, but I never gave Lily James much notice. Unlike literally everyone else in the entire world, I though ‘Baby Driver’ was rather mediocre, so I didn’t notice her much in that. Same thing with ‘Darkest Hour’, although I do remember thinking while watching that that ‘the blonde girl is very talented’. I’ve also never seen ‘Cinderella’ or ‘The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Society’.
So, having never properly lost my Lily James virginity, I decided to (and don’t you dare judge me here, I see everything) watch ‘Pride and Prejudice and Zombies’.
I know. I know. Yeah, the film was awful. But guess what?
Yeah, you guessed it. Lily James was fantastic in that, too. Arguably one of the very few good things in that film. Even in a film like ‘Pride and Prejudice and Zombies’, the young actress managed to provide a truthful, honest, and just overall great performance.
I think to myself sometimes that I may be biased when talking about Lily James. I know she was educated in a London drama school, which is something that I’m currently doing and thus have much respect for all Hollywood actors that trained in one of the good London schools.
But then I look at her act again and put those thoughts aside. Objectively, Lily James is really f*cking talented. Mark my words: that Oscar is coming in a few years.
